The short version

Atlas needs your location to navigate. It shares your location with other people only when you switch that on, only with the people you chose, and only for as long as you leave it on. We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. You can delete your account and your data at any time from Settings → Delete Account in the app.

1. Who we are

Atlas is a mobile navigation application operated by [Registered legal entity name] (“Atlas”, “we”, “us”), registration number [Company registration number], of [Registered street address], South Africa.

For the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) we are the responsible party for the personal information described here. Where the UK or EU General Data Protection Regulation applies to you, we are the controller.

Our Information Officer can be reached at support@atlasdrive.co.za.

2. What we collect

We collect only what the app needs to do the things you ask it to do.

Profile Display name, optional profile photo, and a chosen marker colour. Onboarding, or whenever you edit it

Reports about others Reports you file about a trip or a person, and the reason you gave. Your block list. When you report or block

Information collected automatically

Information stored only on your device

Your saved places, recent destinations, photos you attach to saved place tiles, your app preferences, and any offline queue of unsent reports are stored on your phone. Preferences are also mirrored to your account so they follow you to a new device. Everything in this group is erased from the device when you sign out.

3. Location, specifically

Atlas is a navigation app, so location is the core of it. We want to be precise about how it is used.

While you are using the app

Your precise location is used to place you on the map, to calculate routes, to give turn-by-turn guidance, and to work out when you have arrived.

In the background

If you grant background location access, Atlas continues to receive your position when the screen is off or you switch to another app. This exists so that guidance keeps working mid-drive and so a share you have deliberately started stays live while your phone is in your pocket. You can decline background access and still use Atlas — guidance will only run while the app is open.

When it is shared with other people

Your location leaves your device and reaches another person in exactly four situations, all of which you start:

If you are following a convoy, your position is not broadcast

Only the leader's position is ever transmitted to a trip. No follower's location is sent to the group, stored as a trip position, or visible to the admin. The leader's broadcast is published by our server rather than by the leader's phone, which means another member cannot forge a position and pretend to be the leader.

Stopping

Stopping a share, leaving a circle, ending a trip, or signing out removes your live position record from our servers. It is deleted, not merely hidden from other people's screens.

What we do not do with location

5. Who your information is shared with

Other Atlas users

People you report or block

Blocking is one-directional and silent. The person you block is not told, and cannot discover that you blocked them. Reports you file are visible only to us, not to the person reported.

Legal

We may disclose information if we are required to by law, a court order, or a lawful request from a competent authority, or where we reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent serious harm.

Business transfers

If Atlas is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may transfer as part of that transaction. We will tell you before it happens and before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

6. Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run Atlas. They process personal information on our instructions only, under contract, and may not use it for their own purposes.

ProviderWhat they doWhat they receive
Supabase Database, authentication, file storage, and realtime messaging All account, profile, trip, circle and report data
Google Maps Platform Route calculation, place search, map rendering, weather conditions, and speech synthesis for voice guidance Coordinates and search terms needed to answer each request. Requests are made from our servers, not directly from your device, except for map tile rendering.

8. How your information is protected

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.

9. Your rights and choices

Under POPIA, and under the GDPR where it applies to you, you may:

To exercise any of these, email support@atlasdrive.co.za. We respond within 30 days.

In-app controls

10. Deleting your account

You can request deletion from Settings → Delete Account in the app. If you cannot sign in, email support@atlasdrive.co.za from the address on the account.

When you request deletion:

Some content does not disappear with your account: messages you sent to a trip and community hazard reports you filed may remain, but they are disassociated from your identity. We may also retain a minimal record where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to enforce a ban against someone who has been abusive.

11. Children

Atlas is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you are under 18, you should only use Atlas with the involvement of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

12. International transfers

Our service providers may process your information outside South Africa, including in the European Union and the United States. Where information is transferred out of South Africa we rely on section 72 of POPIA, and where the GDPR applies we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision.

13. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change, and change the “last updated” date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your personal information, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
